Building Relationships and Value with Local Communities Around Mining Operations
Over the past 25 years, Cameco Corporation has built a long standing relationship with local communities around their operations that have enabled both parties to obtain strong value through proactive Aboriginal engagement and resource development. As a result, Cameco is Canada’s largest industrial employer of Aboriginal peoples, with 79% local support (fall 2014) for Uranium mining and milling activities, and has over $3 billion spent with local suppliers since 2004.
Cameco has participated in a unique government-community–industry partnership focused on additional environmental engagement, which led to the first community driven environmental monitoring program, establish in 1999. This partnership between First Nation, Metis communities, and Cameco continues to evolve. This lecture will focus on how and why Cameco has established relationships with local communities, and how it will continue to add value to both parties moving forward in an ever changing landscape.
