THE CHALLENGE

The GGC is the first competition of its kind, stepping away from the paper-based case study and offering students a hands-on experience taken straight from the investment industry.

CHOOSE WISELY, THE STAKES ARE HIGH

  • YOU ARE A FINANCIAL ADVISOR.
  • THREE CEOs PITCH THEIR COMPANIES TO YOU.
  • YOU CAN CHOOSE ONLY ONE TO PITCH TO YOUR TOP TIER CLIENTS.

WHAT IS THE GOODMAN GOLD CHALLENGE?

The Goodman Gold Challenge (GGC) is the most unique and realistic mining investment competition for undergraduate students in the world and registration is now open! There are only twelve spots available so it is advised that teams reserve their spots as soon as possible.

Using existing companies in their current situations, the GGC is unlike all other competitions; not paper-based and not using fictitious companies.

This challenge enacts an investment scenario in which each participating university team plays the role of a finance firm. The firms are competing for a single, wealthy client’s business and their investment committee.

Executives from three real mining companies will “pitch” their business to the teams, and they will need to select one in which to invest. The teams will have to prove through thorough analysis that they indeed have a better investment strategy, better return, and the best justification for their decision.

The student’s performance could win their team the cash equivalent of four (4) ounces of gold.

  • WHO?
    Teams of Four Undergraduate Students!
  • WHEN?
    JANUARY 31 – FEBRUARY 2, 2024!
  • WHERE?
Laurentian University, Goodman School of Mines, Sudbury, ON!
  • WHAT?
The most unique mining investment competition for undergraduate students!

About the Goodman School of Mines:

The Goodman School of Mines was created to help Canada meet the impending employment shortfall in the mining industry that is estimated to be between 60,000 and 130,000 new workers by 2020, many of which will require a university degree. Our vision is to be the University for the development of world-class credentials in the five key areas that define the mining cycle:
In the three key areas in society (People & Community, Environment & Ecology, Economy) that are impacted by it.

About Sudbury, Ontario, Canada:

With three postsecondary institutions, leading medical facilities, and a rich mining history, Sudbury, Ontario is known as the capital of Northern Ontario. With that comes the Northern weather.
Visiting Sudbury in February, students can expect several feet of snow, with temperatures potentially dipping in the -30s and -40s Celsius. Students are asked to bring warm clothing for winter weather, including boots (walking to and from certain venues) and a winter jacket. There will be coat-check services available during the competition’s events.
It is worth noting that flights to and from Sudbury could be delayed or cancelled due to winter weather.

FUN FACTS:

The Sudbury Structure is a famous geological feature that hosts one of the largest concentrations of nickel-copper sulphides in the world. The Sudbury Basin, 27 km (17 mi.) wide, 60 km (37 mi.) long and 15 km (10 mi.) deep, is believed to have been formed by a meteorite impact 1.8 billion years ago.
Sudbury is home to the largest integrated mining complex in the world. There are 5,000 km (3,107 mi.) of mining tunnels under the Sudbury area. Placed end-to-end, you could drive from Sudbury to Vancouver underground.
There are a total of 330 freshwater lakes within the city – more lakes than any other municipality in Canada. Lake Wahnapitae is the largest city contained lake in the world. Ramsey Lake, in the heart of Sudbury, is the second.
Sudbury’s landmark Big Nickel is 9 metres (30 ft.) high and recognized around the world.
Sudbury has the third largest Francophone population in Canada outside of Quebec.
Laurentian University launched an unprecedented research initiative named Metal Earth which received $104 million in funding from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) and academia and industry partners.

Course/Workshop Description

Industrial challenges can be effectively addressed with the help of academic, government, community and private sector partners. Local industries do not need to work in isolation in developing and implementing remediation measures. Sudbury, Ontario, Canada is a model for the value of having a very high degree of community buy-in and community participation. The Environmental Remediation course and field trips are multidisciplinary, integrating environmental and social sciences to guide participants through an overview of the history of damage and environmental recovery of the mining-impacted landscape around Sudbury. The application of established and new innovative techniques in remediation, soil rehabilitation, pollutant neutralization and sequestration, biomining, and the creation of novel ecosystems is reviewed and critically examined. The course features current and ongoing research initiatives and outlines ongoing challenges while making the science and methods transferable to other damaged sites globally.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn through a multidisciplinary investigation of Sudbury's historical environmental degradation and decades of innovation how we have restored terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and use remediation strategies in managing mining-impacted environments.
  • Understand the importance of Sudbury’s restoration and scientific innovation within Canada’s mining sector and globally.
  • Integrate understanding of ecosystem connectivity and multiple stressors.
  • Understand mining impacts and environmental remediation practices.

Course Modules

  • Module 1: Sudbury History: Mining and Environmental Damage
  • Module 2: Environmental and Soil Contamination
  • Module 3: Revegetation and Ecological Restoration
  • Module 4: Terrestrial and Aquatic Linkages to Ecosystem Recovery
  • Module 5: Mine Waste Management: Legacy Challenges and Current Approaches
  • Module 6: Transfer of Sudbury Remediation Science to Global Site

What happens when you arrive in Sudbury?

Laurentian University has organized a series of activities where participants are able to experience the Sudbury success story first-hand, the challenges that remain, and the efforts of ensuring continued environmental remediation. We will then work together to guide and help your team build your environmental strategies. At the end of the workshop, participants will receive a Goodman School of Mines Professional Development Certificate of Participation.
