The Goodman School of Mines mourns loss of Founder and longtime University supporter, Ned Goodman

Flags on campus will be lowered at half-mast on August 11, 2022 to honour and commemorate the life of Dr. Ned Goodman, who passed away at the age of 85 on Sunday, August 7, 2022.

 

Dr. Goodman held many connections to Laurentian University. In 2012, the Goodman School of Mines was created after a transformational gift from the Goodman family. Dr. Goodman also received an Honorary Doctorate from Laurentian in 2019. Dr. Goodman’s son, Jonathan Goodman, currently serves as the Chair of the Advisory Board to the Goodman School of Mines, Executive in Residence within the Faculty of Management, and as a member of the Board of Directors at MIRARCO.

 

A prolific philanthropist, he founded the Goodman Institute of Investment Management at Concordia University in Montreal, where he served as an adjunct professor and a member of the Associates of the Chancellor. Additionally, Dr. Goodman served as the Chancellor of Brock University from 2007 to 2015, the same institution that renamed the School of Business to the Goodman School of Business in 2012.

 

Dr. Goodman was recognized across Canada as a visionary business leader who helped develop Canada’s standing as a world leader in the resource industry. After receiving his MBA in 1962, he went into business. In 1967 he earned the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst. He then co-founded Beutel, Goodman & Company, offering pension funds and private client investment advice. He later founded Dundee Corporation which provided backing for numerous successful mining companies that have dominated the Canadian mining landscape over the past 35 years.

 

In 2016 he was appointed to the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honour.

M. Goodman a tissé beaucoup de liens avec l’Université Laurentienne. En 2012, l’École des mines Goodman a été créée grâce à un don transformationnel reçu de la famille Goodman. En 2019, M. Goodman a obtenu un titre honorifique de la Laurentienne et, aujourd’hui, son fils, Jonathan Goodman, préside le Conseil consultatif de l’École des mines Goodman, est cadre en résidence dans la Faculté de gestion et siège au conseil consultatif de MIRARCO.

 

Grand philanthrope, M. Goodman a fondé le Goodman Institute of Investment Management à l’Université Concordia, à Montréal, où il était professeur associé et membre des associés du chancelier. En outre, de 2007 à 2015, il a exercé les fonctions de chancelier de l’Université Brock, établissement qui, en 2012, a rebaptisé « Goodman School of Business » son école de commerce.

 

Reconnu partout au pays comme dirigeant visionnaire qui a aidé à établir le Canada comme leader mondial de l’industrie des ressources, M. Goodman s’est lancé en affaires après l’obtention de sa MBA en 1962. En 1967, il a reçu le titre d’analyste financier agréé et a fondé ensuite Beutel, Goodman & Company, offrant des régimes de retraite et des conseils en matière d’investissement aux clients privés. Plus tard, il a constitué Dundee Corporation, qui a offert un soutien à de nombreuses compagnies minières fructueuses qui dominent le paysage minier canadien depuis 35 ans.

 

En 2016, il a été nommé à l’Ordre du Canada, plus haute distinction honorifique de notre pays.
