Dr. Nadia Mykytczuk appointed leader at MIRARCO

MIRARCO Mining Innovation is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nadia Mykytczuk as the Interim President and CEO of MIRARCO effective May 25, 2021. In this capacity, Dr. Mykytczuk will provide support to the Goodman School of Mines at Laurentian University.

 

An environmental microbiologist, Dr. Mykytczuk’s work focuses on bioleaching and mine remediation. Dr. Mykytczuk is a graduate of Laurentian University with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Adaptation to Environmental Stressors in Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, and Carleton University with Bachelor of Science (BS) in Environmental Science. She was also a Postdoctoral Fellow at McGill University from 2010 to 2012. She returned to Laurentian University in 2012, as a research scientist and an associate professor in the School of the Environment, training several highly qualified personnel and leading many projects that allowed her to collaborate with major mining industry partners on remediation applications. In 2018, she received the Laurentian University Innovation Award, which is awarded to a researcher whose research has resulted in an innovative technology, process or product that benefits both the university community and society at large. From 2016 to 2021, she held the role of Industrial Research Chair in Biomining, Bioremediation, and Science Communication. Dr. Mykytczuk is regarded as one of Canada’s top experts in biomining and bioremediation.

Jennifer Abols, who had held both the positions of President and CEO of MIRARCO and Executive Director of Goodman School of Mines since 2019, recently accepted the role of Director of Projects for Alamos Gold. She is very pleased that Nadia has been chosen for the role and notes, “Nadia is a great fit for MIRARCO. She is very well respected in the mining industry and brings a depth of research and educational experience to the roles”.

 

Jonathan Goodman, Board Member at MIRARCO adds, “While we are sad to see Jennifer go, we are thrilled to have Nadia on board at MIRARCO. Her work on Mine Reclamation and Bioleaching epitomizes everything that we stand for with respect to modern mining practices.”

 

Dr. Mykytczuk will continue to advance her research in biomining and bioremediation while supporting and growing the applied research expertise and projects at MIRARCO in her new role.

 

 

Mme Nadia Mykytczuk nommée dirigeante de MIRARCO

La Société de recherche appliquée en innovation minière et de réhabilitation (MIRARCO) est heureuse d’annoncer la nomination de la P re Nadia Mykytczuk, Ph.D., au poste de PDG depuis le 25 mai 2021. À ce titre, elle prête aussi un appui à l’École des mines Goodman à l’Université Laurentienne.

 

Microbiologiste environnementale, P re  Mykytczuk se concentre dans ses travaux sur la biolixiviation et la remise en état de mines. Elle a préparé à l’Université Laurentienne un doctorat (Ph.D.) en adaptation d’acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans aux facteurs de stress environnemental et un baccalauréat ès sciences en sciences environnementales à l’Université Carleton. De 2010 à 2012, elle a été chercheuse postdoctorale à l’Université McGill. En 2012, elle est revenue à l’Université Laurentienne en qualité de chercheuse et de professeure agrégée dans l’École de l’environnement, où elle a formé plusieurs professionnels hautement qualifiés et dirigé de nombreux projets lui permettant de collaborer à des applications d’assainissement avec d’importants partenaires de l’industrie minière. En 2018, elle a reçu le Prix d’innovation de l’Université Laurentienne pendant la Semaine de la recherche. Ce prix est décerné à un chercheur ou à une chercheuse qui effectue des recherches ayant débouché sur une technologie, un procédé ou un produit des plus innovants et avantageux pour la communauté universitaire et la société en général. De 2016 à 2021, elle a été titulaire de la Chaire de recherche industrielle en bioprospection, bioremédiation et communication scientifique. Elle est reconnue comme l’une des principales expertes en matière de bioprospection et de bioremédiation au Canada.


Mme Jennifer Abols, qui exerçait depuis 2009 les rôles de PDG de MIRARCO et de directrice générale de l’École des mines Goodman, a accepté récemment le poste de directrice de projets pour Alamos Gold. « Nadia convient bien à MIRARCO, a affirmé Mme Abols, qui se dit heureuse de cette nomination. Nadia est très respectée dans l’industrie minière et apportera à ce rôle sa vaste expérience de la recherche et de l’enseignement. »

 

« Bien qu’il soit malheureux de voir partir Mme Abols, a ajouté M. Jonathan Goodman, membre du conseil de MIRARCO, nous nous réjouissons d’accueillir Nadia à MIRARCO. Ses travaux en remise en état des mines et biolixiviation incarnent tout ce que nous tenons à cœur en matière de pratiques minières modernes. »

 

Dans ce nouveau rôle, P re  Mykytczuk continuera à faire avancer ses recherches en bioprospection et bioremédiation tout en appuyant et faisant croître l’expertise et les projets de recherche à MIRARCO.
