This award was created in memory of Franklin Pickard, who received an honorary doctorate at Laurentian University in Business Administration.
Frank Pickard was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame in 1998, was the first Sudbury native to climb the ranks from labourer to President and Chief Executive Officer of Falconbridge Ltd. His leadership and vision led to the Collahuasi project in Northern Chile and the Raglan Project in Quebec. His remarkable career with the company also included overseeing the return to the public market as well as the opening of the Craig mine in Sudbury.
Established by the Pickard Family. The purpose of this award is to encourage and support the attainment of educational goals by individuals who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement, who have a need for financial assistance and who have made a positive contribution to their university or community through involvement in extra-curricular activities. The recipient must be a full-time student in a program related to mining. The recipient will be chosen by the Student Awards Office in consultation with the Executive Director of the Goodman School of Mines at Laurentian University. Value is variable.
