Wilderness Camping, First Aid and Survival Skills

What is Wilderness Camping, First Aid and Survival Skills?

This is a practical course designed for individuals working on remote sites or participating in outdoor activities within hours of medical assistance. This course provides participants with an introduction to wilderness first aid, with an emphasis on practical skills decision making and dealing with environmental conditions. This course includes an introduction to backpacking, camping techniques and basic wilderness living skills with an overnight camping experience.

 

Prerequisite:

Standard First Aid and CPR (available October 4/5)

 

 

 

Includes:

“Wilderness First Aid Certificate” from Sirius Wilderness Medicine

and

“Camping and Survival Skills Certificate” from Goodman School of Mines (Includes training in: Wild Animal Attacks and Avoidance, Arctic Survival, Swift Water Rescue and Cold Water Immersion)

 

This is a Laurentian Co-Curricular event.

 

 

Price:

Cost: $110/Student (includes Sirius certificate, Materials and Equipment Rentals, Camping dinner and breakfast and 1 Lunch on Sunday)

(GSM will be subsidizing this course to make it more affordable for students.)

Minimum Enrollment: 8

Maximum Enrollment: 20

 

 

Tentative Schedule:

Saturday, October 25th, 2014
9:00am – 4:00pm – Wilderness First Aid (Part 1)
*Bring a bagged lunch for Saturday
4:00pm – 5:30pm – Hike to camping location (on-campus) and set up
5:30pm – 7:00pm – Camping dinner (provided)
7:00pm – 9:00pm – Camping Survival Skills

 

Sunday October 26th, 2014
7:00am – 8:00am – Camping Breakfast (Provided)8:00am – 10:00am – Pack up and head back to class
10:00am – 5:00pm – Wilderness First Aid (Part 2) – Lunch will be provided

 

 

 

We ask that students DO NOT bring their own camping equipment to the course as it will be provided. The only item that you may bring is a sleeping bag.

 

 

 

Course Instructor:

Jim Little, BSc (Applied Science in Engineering), Program coordinator of the Outdoor Adventure Leadership Program at LU, Certified instructor in moving water and canoe tripping discipline, Sirius Instructor since 2003.
